Side hustles are everywhere on social media, all promising fast cash and “financial freedom.” So, I decided to actually test seven of the most popular ones for a month each. Here’s what really happened.
1. Reselling thrifted clothes – Fun, but profit margins were thin after shipping and platform fees. Average earnings: $80/month for hours of sourcing and listing.
2. Freelance writing – Decent pay once I landed clients, but finding those clients ate up more time than the actual writing.
3. Food delivery apps – Flexible hours, low pay after gas and wear-on-car costs. Barely broke even some weeks.
4. Print-on-demand store – Easy to set up, nearly impossible to get noticed without heavy ad spend I wasn’t willing to risk.
5. Selling digital templates – surprising amount of upfront design work for inconsistent sales.
6. Pet sitting – sweet gig, genuinely enjoyable, but capped by how many clients I could realistically take on.
7. Tutoring online – This was the one. Steady demand, repeat clients, and I could charge what my time was actually worth. Within six weeks I had a predictable weekly income that didn’t require constant hustling for new customers.
Why tutoring won: It rewarded expertise instead of just time, the demand was consistent, and clients kept coming back-no chasing one-off gigs every week.
The real lesson: Not all side hustles are created equal. The best ones use a skill you already have, attract repeat business, and don’t drain more time than they’re worth. Before jumping into the next trending hustle, ask yourself: does this pay for my time, or just my hope?
